The Metallica Blacklist

My friend Scott gives me musical recommendations from time to time. He sent me an innocuous text a week or so ago: Normally a couple of songs sends me into an afternoon long diversion of musical exploration. This album is 54 songs! 12 Versions of Enter Sandman, alone. Yikes. Full disclosure, I didn’t listen to the entire album… yet. I wanted to get back to Scott sometime before Christmas, so I focused on the songs that I know really well and love. I’ve mostly restricted myself to positive comments, though occasionally I can’t help myself. FWIW, here are my thoughts on having listened to most of them through twice. If you subscribe to Apple Music, this is the link: https://music.apple.com/ca/album/the-metallica-blacklist/1572050303 Enter Sandman Alessia Cara Probably the best of the pop versions of any of the songs (and Canadian!) Rina Sawayama  Loved some of the harmonic choices she used in her vocals, but was mostly underwhelmed by the music  Sad but true Sam fender Soooo far from th

Birch Bay, Waskesiu 2021: "cold" camping

Image
Wendy and I have been increasing our camping/canoeing frequency since our children have graduated high school. The one aspect that we have not done for a VERY long time is winter camping. It was the first way we ever camped together when we started obsessively spending time together, but it is a lot of work and our children never enjoyed camping enough that we ever felt inclined to try and do it with them as tiny dependants. Our 25-year-old 'Eureka' tent from Lee and Sandi Also, while the COVID-19 pandemic is terrible for trying to do normal things (like travel to places other people want to go), it is less terrible for going to places few people want to go. Hey, Saskatchewan, how are you doing? So, we invited David (at the cost of $5.01/night)--yes, we made him pay his own way--to meet with us at Birch Bay to share some social distanced solitude. I’m not sure exactly where Wendy, Teela, Jessie, Ali, and I were, but it was definitely on Waskesiu, so it was like a bit of a ho

My Apple Watch Usage (Series 3)

Image
A response to Federico’s  concern that series 3 users are all like his mom ( Connected #334 ) . I feel like I may be getting a bit more than my Mickey Mouse’s worth from this thing. But, I’ll let you be the judge of that. For the oddly curious, I've previously done a (handwritten) review of the series 3 , in 2018. Also, the series 0 , in 2015 General Use Pattern I put on my watch first thing in the morning (6:30am) and take it off when I go to bed (10:30pm).  Mostly, the watch serves as a way to get silent notifications (I hate phone pings and constant phone glancing), and to add items to my todo, omnifocus, and grocery lists. I also use it disturbingly often to locate my misplaces phone :) There are typically three scenarios where I might remove it during the day: top-up charging, photography, keynote slideshow (see below) Exercise I track yoga and walking exercise after breakfast. Then I may track a run or VR exercise playing Beat Saber. Pre-pandemic I ran a lot of stairs

Clearing my Circle

I played a lot of hacky sack when I was in university. Like so many of my activities, I'm afraid I did it to the point of obsession. My main partner for the game was Dave. We would find a patch of grass in a park and hack for hours at a time. He used to make fun of me for a particular behaviour that I would engage in as I played. Each time I passed the hacky sack to him, I would quickly grab a pinecone, or a small stick that was in the grass and toss it out of my zone of play, which I called my "spot." Clearing my spot was an obsessive activity that I engaged in every time I played the game. Dave said I reminded him of a squirrel--running round collecting things in the grass and organizing them. I just wanted my area to be clear of debris. Poor choice during partner's zoom call 25 years later, I was having a conversation with Wendy. I was trying to explain--yet another instance--of why I liked a particular piece of Lululemon clothing. I may have already told you abou
