@#$%ing Fathers

Sister moon will be my guide In your blue blue shadows I would hide All good people asleep tonight I'm all by myself in your silver light I would gaze at your face the whole night through I'd go out of my mind but for you Lying in a mother's arms The primal root of a woman's charms I'm a stranger to the sun My eyes are too weak How cold is a heart When it's warmth that he seeks? You watch every night, you don't care what I do I'd go out of my mind, but for you I'd go out of my mind, but for you My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun My hunger for her explains everything I've done To howl at the moon the whole night through And they really don't care if I do I'd go out of my mind, but for you Sister Moon -Sting- The recent lunar eclipse was on a Wednesday. What fortune for me and what a night. I got lousy pictu...

Hardware Night

Nope, we weren't playing with power tools. Within, you can see the kinds of distractions that Handwing provided and the frightening ferocity that Kyro displays when you suggest that his dog is not on par with Lassie or the Littlest Hobo. Hardware in Vanscoy Here is a link in case you are old fashioned . . . link

Avast

Post Christmas Wednesdays have been just as frequent as one might expect of a Wednesday. Unfortunately, questy events on said days have been sparse. The week after a brief and very successful meeting to play Pirates of the Spanish Main , we had a blizzard to contend with. The game was mostly a race for second place. Rainswept took home the most gold in the end and Handwing got the silver medal. Yours truly was dead last, but at least I was compleatly wiped off the board by a combination of poor choices and Rainswept's submarine! You can see it about to ram one of my ships in this picture. In the following image you can see how Physics Brad falls prey to a devastating broadside attack. Anyway, for about $60 we had a rollicking good time. Some of the rules could use a little smoothing, though.

Did you see it coming?

Yes, that's right. I'm going to be skipping out on you all on Q-Wednesdays. There are 4 rehersals scheduled per week (not including set construction), and even if they weren't T,W,Th, and Su, I would still need to bail until near Christmas. It's gonna be hard for you to survive without me, but somehow you will pull through. I am hoping to still manage to see you on the shooting range most Saturdays (hope, hope) . Since it's Halloween and all, I hope to have some pics up tomorrow, or the day after. Just in case you don't know what it looks like or something.

Retro Ridiculous

I thought my innocence was lost. Recently, even Bethedasoft's Oblivion has been failing to rouse any interest in my usual frenzied need for videogames. Enter Wednesday night retro-gaming with the Bros. D. Who would have thought that a MAME game with only two colours, that I have never previously played, could have charmed me so? Ripcord ! (klov.com) considering how ancient this game is, the gameplay is awesome. There are only about three things you can do: Jump from the plane, move left or right, and ... O.K., two things! It's the feel and look of the game. The free-fall sensation before you pull your ripcord (oh, yeah, that's three) is terrific. I could almost feel the wind rushing past my monochrome face. A must play! 1979, no less. Curious? Here is the ***WARNING .pdf ICKY*** original arcade manual ***WARNING*** for the game. Cool instructions on dip switches and soundboards. Any of you people have a notable or favorite two-tone game?

Geek Night...

My post is a bit tardy, but if you really want to know what I've been up to, I must include this fine evening before I can tell you about anything else. Rainswept, Kyro, and I were privileged to spend the evening over at Cuz Jay's Howse. The coffee could have been better, but that might have spoiled the great retro feeling that was in the air. Wine Gums and Sour Skittles were plentifully provided by the Captain and enjoyed by all -- including two of Jay's spawn and visiting little cousin Emily. Vin GM'd and we other three each took a single 3rd level character through the classic gaming goodness that is "The Keep on the borderlands." How many times will I begin this module in my (hopefully) long life? How many times will hoards of Gnolls, Clerics, Hobgoblins, Goblins, and their uneasy roommate the Minotaur haunt my dreams the next time I sleep? Longing to know more? You will have to come to the next revival. Kyro appears to have high hopes for an update. Hopef...

QW-Mar29th, 2006

rich and tasty double Americano thanks to the fine Broadway Roastery staff An intimate affair over at the Bway Roastery this week. James came by for a bit. We discussed muscial education for one and all. It was the decided opinion of the table that we would all have been better off learning basic musical theory rather than biological taxonomies (much as I personally enjoyed that unit). I guess there is a lot of disputing over educational priorities. After James left, Vin and I had some good discussion about literature and about the value of having children and opening up to let them teach you. Probably not so important if you were one of those persons who paid attention in your formative years. But I find that there is a lot I have learned about being a kid since having them.

J-Pepper comes to town

Qwoden's day started out to be like any other board gaming event. Vin, Jay and Jim showed up (all on time no less) and we commenced. Things soon took a drastic turn for the worse and the house was very nearly destroyed in the ensuing chaos. Thinking of posterity, I snapped a picture from my entry way at grave personal risk. Then, with a deft bit of baking I was able to calm things down a bit and eventually all was back to normal. We finnished the evening with Jay kicking our butts at Blokus, which prompted him to immediately go and buy his own copy -- presumably in order to humble members of his own family in similar fashion.

Qwednesday Poker Night

Image
Sounds like an official sanctioned event. Perhaps it will even happen again. Here is the scoop. I've been wracking my brains trying to come up with activities that meet several criteria: fun "questy" - you figure that out! allow for coffee AND conversation inexpensive group oriented Despite its current popularity, poker still meets them all, so there we are. All I needed to have a successful event was to find cards, poker chips, and willing participants. Dave showed up at my door at the stroke of 8 -- perfect! Looking a bit cold, but claiming the health benefits were worth it. Vin came before we were barely started our first cup of Organic Mexican Dark Roast Coffee. We had just discussed the merits of variations of the game and decided on the current darling of the poker world, Texas Hold 'em , when James arrived. We each took a dollars worth of change and the game began. I soon decided we needed fresh chocolate chip cookies. The daycare and I had made some dough ear...

QT-Pool, Revisited

These are the same pictures you can find over at little scratches. I'm going to be a bit more specific about details of the evening, and probably a lot less funny. If you think that is unlikely or impossible, read on forewarned. It was with pleasant surprise that I fielded both and email from Dave and a phone call. For me, contact with the Doctor is spotty at best and it was like a monsoon come to the Gobi. Needless to say, we rushed to set out containers to collect the water and after Vin arrived at my place we were quick to depart and scoop Dave from the bus-stop on 5 corners. Starcat and the Doctor traded some fine blows as the only real contenders at the table Despite a promising name, I was nervous upon entering the Q-Room. It is a fairly spartan set-up compared to some of the competition. But, eventually it managed to win my fickle affections. It is neither trendy and full of UofS students, nor is it seedy with burly bikers and pool hasbins. Probably that is thanks to us bein...

Quest Time

or as I have affectionately come to call it QT . The acronym can also currently be used for "Quest Tuesday," the mysterious " on the q.t. ", or (as it happens) quite a few other things . What the hell is it? What is it good for? As with many things worth explaining , the answer is (too?) complex. I use The Quest as a way of describing my approach to life. I don't think that is uncommon. It is an ideal -- a personal measure of the quality of how I am living. I could (and will eventually) spend pages trying to prosify what is a very simple idea which still seems ineffable. Instead, for now, I will offer two poems that I have written which may clarify my particular approach. We'll talk more of this later... Sherandilin He Who Watches Sherandilin, the city fair. The questor's souls have perched 'mongst rare And wondrous beings of power and might Whose deeds become my dreams at night. When last I lay my wearied head, The questor's trail-song stands i...

I am the Pirate King

After a teriffic audition, I have officially been cast as The Pirate King in GIlbert and sullivan's Pirates of Penzance Still have some scheduling to discuss with the director before I can be full steam ahead on this one, but it is looking good. QT was quiet last eve. James and I played a magnetic varient of connect-4. The board has randomizable magnets beneath each of the board squares and the player pieces also contain magnets which flip-flop depending on their placement on the board. Vin arrived and, as if by magic, a variety of teas (spicey and not so) were served... following which,we moved to Magettigan's for beverages, desserts and wireless internet madness. Conversation fluctuated between the PSP and roleplaying.
